RYA Combined Theory / Practical Courses (11-Day Experience)

Course Overview

The RYA Combined Theory / Practical Courses is a 11-Day Course, which aims to provide you with a sound understanding of the principles of navigation and seamanship prior to embarking upon a sea-based course or experience.   The skills you will learn and the knowledge you will attain in the days immediately prior to leaving Largs Yacht Haven on board a training yacht will allow you to gain maximum enjoyment from your experience through active participation and understanding.

This course does not assume any pre-requisite knowledge unless you are choosing to participate at Coastal / Yachtmaster level, in which case it is recommended that candidates have RYA Day Skipper syllabus-level knowledge.   Those choosing to participate at RYA Day Skipper level should have at least 100 sea-miles sailng experience prior to booking a RYA Day Skipper Practical Course.    This course is ideal for those wishing to gain the qualifications of both sides of this discipline in a complete course.   It is worth noting that most Western countries, including Scotland, require that skippers hold RYA-level certificates in order to charter a sailing yacht or motor-boat.

Course Content

  • Internation Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea (IRPCS)
  • Chartwork
  • Passage-Making
  • Meteorology
  • Man Over-Board Drills
  • Berthwork
  • Pilotage
  • Skippering Experience

Course Aims

To allow the participant to become proficient in different areas of the same subject - a sound understanding of navigational principles and seamanship before going on immediately to apply them in real-world scenarios at sea during the following 5 days.

Course Structure

This course consists of two RYA Course / Experiences coupled together into one combined course to give you the benefit of a shorebased learning package before embarking on a sea-based course.   You will first complete 5 Days of shorebased learning in our dedicated classroom with its 1st class facilities.   At the end of your initial 5 days and assuming successfull course completion, you will receive your shorebased skippers qualification before embarking on your 5 day practical sailing course.

Your course will begin at 0830hrs in the ScotSail theory classroom at Largs Yacht Haven and will run until approximately 1700hrs each day of your shorebased course, but may run longer in certain circumstances.   Those candidates who have time restrictions should contact ScotSail prior to booking this course, as there will be a written examination on the last day of the theory course which must be passed before your qualification can be awarded.

On the first day of your practical course you and your crew will settle-in to your training yacht and make decisions with your instructor as to where you should travel.    The Firth of Clyde offers a vast range of island and mainland ports and a huge wealth of sea areas.   You will then spend the next 5 days putting your classroom knowledge to the test to expand your skills but, most of all to have fun!

Your Course / Experience

  • Day 1 - Introduction to your ScotSail hosts in our training centre classroom, and begin your theory course.
  • Days 2-6 - Continue and complete your shorebased theory course at the ScotSail centre.   Shorebased Course completion qualifications awarded on Day 6.
  • Days 7-11 - Aboard your training yacht at sea, travelling to various island and mainland ports whilst carrying out excercises.   Practical Course completion qualifications awarded by the Chief Instructor and logbooks marked on Day 11.
